Scroll Cave

The Scroll

Late in December of 2023, I had the chance to explore Scroll Cave in Arizona. After rappelling into the cave, we spent multiple hours crawling through muddy passageways trying to find the feature the cave is named after. Passages shot off in every direction, so we had to leave breadcrumbs to find our way back out. We followed multiple passageways only to have them lead to nowhere and were forced to retrace our steps.  After a few hours, we managed to find the main room that contained the scroll feature. Part of what makes the scroll so impressive is that the rest of the cave is relatively undecorated, making it stand out. We did a good job leaving breadcrumbs and had no problem exiting the cave afterward. This cave could be dangerous for groups who aren't rigorous in marking their path. After only a few hundred feet of crawling, you've passed 10 or more side passages going off in every direction. It's probably for the best that this cave stays hidden.
